Visiting Rovinj

With fantastic beaches, landscape and tourist resorts travel deals to Croatia are becoming even more popular. Croatia has the benefit of relatively cheap prices, compared to Western Europe, stunning scenery, beautiful Mediterranean architecture and warm weather. In particular the city Rovinj attracts countless tourists and travelers every year and its usual 13,000 population swells.

The city is steeped in history, having been once conquered by the Romans, the city has ruins and a basic infrastructure and layout based on Roman principles. Between the 1200s and 1700s the city was an important part of the Republic of Venice and the remaining town walls date from this period as does the old gate called Balbi`s Arch. There is also a clock tower which is from this time. After the fall of the Empire the city became part of the Austrian empire and some of their baroque-inspired influences are also visible in the city`s architecture, although the subsequent Italian rule had more of an effect. The Church of S.Eufernia is one of the city`s landmarks as its interior is exquisite and its exterior is phenomenal and in a stunning location. The city museum is also in a beautiful building and showcases artifacts, paintings and furniture from the city`s history over the centuries.

Rovinj enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with average temperatures ranging from a mild 16C rising to over 25C in the summer months and with a low of 5 in winter. The summer brings sunshine as well as warmth with over 10 hours of sunshine. This means the beaches are almost always pleasant and host different water sports and activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling and volleyball. The harbour is also a beautiful location, with views of the main Rovinj old town and the city`s most famous landmarks. The marina is full of beautiful boats and sailboats and the restaurants lining the seaside are fantastic for all kinds of fresh seafood and local dishes. The Rovinj islands are also perfect for these kinds of things and offer an even more relaxed approach with tranquil stretches of sandy beaches and more authentic examples of the local culture.

There are nineteen islands, all of which are popular with nature-lovers and travelers alike as they are outstanding areas of natural beauty. Inside the forests there are many different kinds of flora and fauna which are completely contrasting to the colourful Mediterranean fish and crustaceans found only metres away on the beach. The islands are easily accessible by boat, although some visitors have enjoyed canoeing between them. Another stunning natural landmark is that of the Fjord which showcases the different rocks and the diverse landscape of Croatia.

The main form of transportation though is the car, as the road network in this area is very good. By highway you can easily reach Zagreb, Trieste and Ljubljana and the rail network is also good with links to main Croatian stations and to other European cities. There are also numerous hotels and small guest lodges within the city to choose from. There are also luxury apartments and bungalows which can be rented out if you would prefer to cater for yourself or try many of the different restaurants in town. To explore Rovinj for yourself, why not try one of the many travel deals available at the moment, as flights from the UK and Europe are cheaper than ever before.
